    YouTube Ads Common FAQ

Thinking about getting started with YouTube ads? There may be many terms that you aren't familiar with when you start, but don't worry! This list of FAQs should be a good start to help you better understand them.

10 Common FAQs about YouTube Ads - CPV, Video Length, Bumper Ads & More

    1) How much does it cost to advertise on YouTube?

On average, YouTube ads have a cost-per-view (CPV) of RM0.03 to RM0.20, but the cost may vary depending on your video length and type.

    2) How long should YouTube ads be?

YouTube ads should optimally be between 15-30 seconds, but you can make ads as short as 5 seconds or even as long as one-minute as long as it's an engaging ad that keeps your viewers watching till the end!

    3) Do you have to pay for ads on YouTube?

Advertisers only pay for showing their ads on YouTube when someone clicks on their ads, or when they watch for a certain duration.

    4) What are bumper ads on YouTube?

YouTube has its own short-form video ad option, which are 6-second video ads. The cost for these ads are based on CPM - cost per thousand impressions, and is available for buying on Google Ads. Bumper ads cannot be skipped.

    5) How do pre-roll ads work?

Pre-roll ads are the video ads that play automatically before YouTube videos play. These are usually billed on a cost-per-view (CPV) bidding system, and you are charged if someone watches your ads for 30 seconds or more. These ads are usually skippable as opposed to bumper ads.

    6) What is a YouTube companion banner?

If you are running a YouTube in-stream ad, you can add a clickable thumbnail image as your companion banner. Companion banners appear on the right sidebar as your YouTube ad plays. These banners can be auto-generated based on other videos you have in your channel.

    7) What is a CTA overlay?

A call-to-action (CTA) overlay is an interactive element that appears over your YouTube ads. These overlays drive engagement and action such as a click-through to your website. They appear when your video ads start, and collapses into just a small thumbnail image after 15 seconds elapsed.

    8) What are YouTube discovery ads?

Previously known as In-Display ads, a TrueView Video Discovery ad is a format that promotes your video on the YouTube search results along with other relevant videos, and also on YouTube mobile homepage. The ad includes a thumbnail image of your video, a headline and description.

    9) What is a Cost-per-View (CPV)?

Cost-per-view (CPV) bidding is the default ad-buying bidding method for YouTube Ads in Google Ads interface. In CPV bidding, you pay for video views, engagements & interactions (Clicks on CTA overlays, cards, companion banners etc). A video view is counted when someone watches at least 30 seconds of your video or the entire length if the video is less than 30 seconds.

    10) How is Cost-per-View (CPV) calculated?

Cost-per-view (CPV) is calculated by dividing the total advertising costs by the number of views - any complete views, 30-second views or interactions count for the final CPV calculation!

Have you ever compared your Google Ads performance report with your Google Analytics and noticed a discrepancy in the number of clicks?

This could be caused by several reasons - it could be due to the wrong date settings, looking at the wrong views or it could be some technical errors.

If you have noticed a discrepancy between the number of clicks on Google Ads & Google Analytics, check each item in the checklist below to find out if you're looking at the right settings first.

Troubleshooting Click Data Discrepancies Between Google Ads and Analytics

Here's a checklist to rule out potential human / technical errors that led to this data discrepancy.

    1) Check linked account

    1. Go to analytics.google.com and click on the gear icon (admin).
    2. Check if you're looking at the right account and property first.
    3. Under the second column marked 'Property', check under 'Google Ads Linking' to see if you have linked your Google Analytics account to the right Google Ads account ID.

    2) Check if you're looking at a filtered view

    1. Go to analytics.google.com and click on the gear icon (admin).
    2. Under the third column marked 'View', check if you have any activated filters. These filters can cause some impressions, clicks and more to be filtered out from Google Analytics, causing the number to be fewer than those shown in Google Ads.

    3) Check date range

    1. Go to analytics.google.com and click on Acquisition, then go to 'Google Ads' and click on 'Campaigns'. You can look at other sub-columns, but looking at campaigns will be a good start.
    2. Check the data range on the upper right corner of Google Analytics and Google Ads and make sure that they are the same ad range.

    4) Check again in 24 hours

If you're comparing the stats for the current date, there may be a time delay for the data to show up either on Google Ads or Google Analytics. Give it a day or two and see if the issue persists. Alternatively, look up the data up to the previous day.

    5) Check if you're looking at Total Clicks in Google Ads

The total clicks in Google Ads can have a discrepancy if you are not looking at 'Total Clicks', especially if you have paused or removed any text ads, keywords, ad groups or even campaigns itself. Look at the lowest row labeled with 'Total Clicks' to determine if you're looking at the right numbers.

Have you gone through the list? Does the problem still persist? Here's a few possible explanations as to why the number of clicks are different in these two platforms.

Possible Reasons for Click Data Discrepancies between Google Ads and Analytics

Wrong Implementation of Google Site Tag

Google Ads will record a click the moment a click has been registered. Meanwhile, Google Analytics only registers a click when the script on the page has been fired.

You will need to insert a line of code into your website for Google Analytics to register site visitors, ad clicks and so on. This line of code will send your site visitor activities to Google Analytics once it loads correctly on your website.

If you have implemented the code on the wrong place - let's say outside the html or outside of body tag, the script will not fire.

Without the script firing, the activity would not be recorded, or the activity recorded might be inaccurate.

When this happens, you can expect there to be fewer clicks on Analytics than on Google Ads.

Script Is Not Firing to Record Clicks

Let's say your website is down - your search and display ads would still appear for some time before Google registers the error.

Clicks can still happen, and the number of clicks will be recorded in your Google Ads interface. Meanwhile, your website does not load at all - the script can't fire if the website is not loaded in the first place.

So, while your Google Ads record, let's say, 10 clicks from your ads, the ads lead to nowhere in particular, and your Google Analytics do not record those clicks.

That's 10 more clicks in your Google Ads as compared to those in your Google Analytics!

Every marketing effort should be carried out with a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) in mind.

    We concur.

However, these KPIs should be relevant - don't create your KPIs just for the sake of creating them!

Here's a blog post guiding you on how you can create the right KPIs that matter for your next marketing campaign and your business.

Five Tips to Remember When Choosing Your Marketing KPIs

Your KPIs are Only as Good as Your Content

Every post, good or bad, can trigger a KPI or two.

A post share can seem good, until you check the shared content to see the person criticizing it. Seeing a post engagement go up can be awesome, but remember that 'Hide this post' can also be a post engagement, albeit a negative one.

Your content quality will determine whether you will get positive data for your KPIs, so create quality content over quantity!

Your KPIs Should be Related to your Business Goals

Always work towards your company goals.

If your company is working towards a better brand awareness, you can look at metrics such as unique reach and new followers. If you are looking at increasing sales, you can look at KPIs such as add-to-carts, purchases and new registrations.

Tie your marketing campaign objectives and goals to your company goals to ensure that you are always moving in the right direction.

    Track Several KPIs That Matters

Include more than just one KPIs for your marketing campaigns.

It wouldn't seem right if, let's say, your 3-month campaign only has a single KPI focused on tracking post engagements. Include other metrics that matters to track everything else that you're accomplishing. A video campaign, as an example, can include video view rates, 100% views, new subscribers and more.

Don't sell yourself short by implementing too few KPIs, but that also brings us to the next point, which is...

Don't Go Overboard with your KPIs

Do you really need 50 KPIs for one marketing campaign?

Reaching KPIs will require you to track and analyze quite a handful of data - who's responsible for what? Which ones can you track easily, and which KPIs will require way too much manpower to sort out?

Choose the KPIs that can tell the audience just enough about what is happening in the current campaign.

    It's Not All About You

So you noticed that your e-mail open rate has dropped this week.

Don't be too quick to blame yourself! Maybe it's just the subject line needing some optimizing, or perhaps your email was delivered during a busy time of the week. Look further - your email with the lowest open rate could be the one with the most additional actions taken!

Don't be too alarmed over one low-engagement post - there could be many factors that are not under your control to start with!

Ultimately, your chosen set of KPIs can determine whether your campaign is considered successful or not, so take some time to think through the metrics that truly matters for your campaign and your company goals!
