If you search for ‘WhatsApp’ on PlayStore or App Store, you might find an identical app under your expected listing.

    It’s called ‘WhatsApp Business’.

WhatsApp Business is optimized for small businesses, and it could be the next big thing that transforms your business.

    What is WhatsApp Business?

You have the normal WhatsApp application in your phone, and then you have this newer one that was launched around the end of January this year in Malaysia.

WhatsApp Business is developed for small business owner who wants to utilize better communication with their customers for an improved customer experience.

It’s free for download on Android and a BETA test (currently fully booked) is underway for iOS users.

    What Can WhatsApp Business Do?

Two WhatsApp Applications in One Device

You can install both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business in a single device, but you will need two unique phone numbers to do so. You will not be able to use your personal WhatsApp number for your WhatsApp Business number.

    Landline/ Fixed Number Support

Your WhatsApp Business does not need to run on mobile numbers. You can also use a landline number to set up your WhatsApp Business account. You will receive a verification code via a phone call to the landline number you selected to set up your account.

    WhatsApp Business Profile

Include your opening hours, business description, website, location and e-mail address in your WhatsApp Business Profile to gain more trust and confidence from prospective customers.

    Business Messaging Tools

Set up automated responses like how you would for your Facebook page. Use this feature to inform your users that you are away! You can also set up quick replies and responses to your customers’ common FAQs and inform them about your ongoing promotions with a single click.

Enjoy the Same Functions that WhatsApp Users Do

You can still send pictures, videos, make voice or video calls online et cetera, just like how you do on your personal WhatsApp account.

    Organized WhatsApp Chats

Use labels on different messaging threads to keep track of your work progress. No more missed pending payments or new customer promotion alerts!

    Messaging Statistics

Keep track of the important metrics when it comes to messaging your customers. This includes number of messages successfully sent, delivered and read among several others.

Why Do I Need WhatsApp Business?

Last year, Facebook conducted a study to find out just how much consumers are messaging businesses. The results showed that more than half of the users who finds businesses online messages them throughout their buying journey.

When surveyed about which particular step they message a business for, 56% answered that they do so across all stages.

That’s everything from inquiring a product to purchasing or booking, followed by after-sale services and feedbacks.

Future updates also await us on Facebook and WhatsApp, including the possibilities of Click-to-Whatsapp ads on Facebook.

Running a bigger business? WhatsApp Business is also catering to that using WhatsApp Business API, a more extensive integration that makes reaching your customers easier - but with a cost.

Most of us immediately associate Alibaba.com with Jack Ma, one of the top few richest people in the world. However, there is plenty more that we can actually associate with this platform. Previously, we have discussed why Alibaba.com is a marketplace that businesses around the world should not miss out on.

We have also disclosed our status as an Official Alibaba Channel Partner (we're approaching our 10-year-partnership together!) and how we can help you with that status.

When you're selling on Alibaba.com, you might find yourself looking at unfamiliar terms on the website, which we will be addressing in this blog post.

    What is Alibaba.com?

Alibaba.com is the biggest selling and buying platform in the world, originating in China. This platform does not only sell to end users - it is also a business-to-business (B2B) marketplace.

While consumers can directly shop for clothes. electronic gadgets, perishable goods and many other types of products on the website, businesses can also source for the materials they need to build their own products here.

Alibaba.com has hundreds of millions of products listed over 40 major categories, including consumer electronics, machinery and apparels. The buyers for these products are located in more than 190 regions around the world, exchanging over 100K messages each day!

    Why Alibaba.com?

Alibaba is more than just a shopping website. It is a B2B search engine connecting buyers and suppliers worldwide. They have a simple mission that they go by - to make it easy to do business everywhere by helping buyers find products and suppliers quickly and efficiently, and giving suppliers a platform and the tools to reach global audiences.

While consumers are actively looking for good and retail purchases online, the sellers source for their own materials and products from manufacturers and distributors worldwide.

    How Does Alibaba.com Work?

If you’re Malaysian and have shopped online at least once or twice, you might already understand how Alibaba.com works.

If you have used online shopping websites such as Shopee, Lazada and 11Street, then you definitely already know how Alibaba.com works.

Alibaba.com works in the same way as all of these other shopping platform. You can input your company information, product name, dimensions and descriptions, prices and shipping fees et cetera as a seller.

You can also key in your shipping address and start purchasing on the platform as a buyer and enjoy buyer protection by using the trade assurance, return and refund policies that Alibaba.com has implemented to ensure a good customer experience.

Can You Buy Retail on Alibaba?

Since Alibaba is a B2B marketplace, it is uncommon to purchase a single item from a supplier. This is because most products have a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ). However, you might be able to do so if you negotiate on Alibaba, since you have the option to contact the manufacturer directly!

    Can You Negotiate on Alibaba?

One of the best benefits of Alibaba is that you can work directly with the manufacturers of your choice. When you purchase and sell on Alibaba.com, you can purchase in high volumes and lower prices, thus getting yourself a high volume discount. You can then start to create your own products with all of these materials!

    Is Alibaba B2B or B2C?

Alibaba.com itself is a marketplace for B2B sales. However, Alibaba Group provides different platforms to serve different types of users and marketers. As such, they have platforms just for B2B, B2C, or even C2C as well! Taobao is for smaller B2C and C2C sales. Tmall is for B2C sales.

What is Gold Supplier on Alibaba?

A Gold Supplier on Alibaba has a premium membership for suppliers on this B2B platform. These members have a comprehensive range of methods to promote their products, such as a bigger product showcase, higher e-wallet currency exchange rates and several other perks. While the process to be qualified as a Gold Supplier on Alibaba.com is strict, the return of investment is high because buyers prefer to buy from a Gold Supplier or an Assessed Supplier.

    Are Alibaba Gold Suppliers Safe?

Alibaba Gold Suppliers need to verify their business license, contact information, business location and ownership, photo of the operations, certifications from their contractors and to verify their main product lines / services. With so many verifications carried out, you can feel safe in the knowledge that your suppliers are legit and not a scam.

There are also trade assurances to protect the buyers and suppliers, further increasing the safety of buying and selling on Alibaba.com.

What does Assessed Supplier Mean on Alibaba?

Anyone can register for a seller account on Alibaba, but that does not mean that they are all verified sellers! This means that individuals can claim to be the person in charge for a business that they in fact, are not.

Assessed Supplier is a service provided by Alibaba.com that verifies your business ownership through the usage of a fully-independent and impartial third-party verification of your potential suppliers. These third party companies include the Bureau Veritas, TÜV Rheinland or other similar companies.

What is Trade Assurance on Alibaba?

Alibaba.com introduced Trade Assurance to help enforce more trust among traders and buyers when using this platform. When you place trade assurance on the products that you purchase, your order is protected until you get them. As such, if the shipment is lost during the air freight or ship freight journey, or perhaps your parcel is lost when going through local delivery, Alibaba.com will take full responsibilities and liabilities for your purchases.

    Alibaba.com Membership Package

You can register for free as a buyer or seller on Alibaba.com, but paid memberships as a seller, known as Gold Supplier Membership, will be more valuable for an Alibaba.com seller.

Even for Gold Memberships, there are three different tiers - Basic, Standard and Premium packages.

All three premium packages, basic, standard and premium packages, have unlimited product posting, product showcases, ability to quote buying requests, comes with a verified icon and a customized website.

The premium membership on Alibaba.com also comes with personalized customer service as well, which is a nice perk.

However, the main difference between these 3 premium memberships on Alibaba.com is the number of products you can display in a product showcase. The basic package lets you display 5, while the standard and premium package lets you display 12 and 28 respectively.

What are Product Showcases on Alibaba.com?

You may have over 1000 products that you display on Alibaba.com, but it is impossible for all of these products to be shown on the main page of your website. Alibaba.com product showcase is like the product displays you see in stores, so you can put the products that you are promoting on these slots.

How do I Get a Refund on Alibaba?

If you have already paid for your purchase under a trade assurance order, you can apply for a refund by going to the ‘Order’, then ‘All Orders’ menu. Look for the relevant order and click on ‘view more’ under the descriptions of the order.

At the bottom of the order details, you will see a button that says ‘Apply for Refund’. You can then fill in the dispute form with the details of why you are applying for a refund, and up to 5 pictures serving as evidence where needed.

Then your dispute and refund application is filled. You can check your dispute status on the ‘Order Management’ page.

How do I Cancel a Trade Assurance Order?

You need to check your order status to determine if it is eligible for an order cancellation.

For orders with status ' Waiting for supplier to confirm order' and 'Waiting for your payment', you can just enter the order and click on the 'Cancel order' option.

Orders that you have just paid for and is still being processed cannot be canceled. You will need for the payment to be processed first, and then apply for a refund.

Orders that have status saying 'Waiting for supplier to ship' will require your seller's agreement to cancel the order after you applied for refund, so you might want to communicate with the seller in advance. If no agreement is reached, you can escalate the case and Alibaba will help you to handle the refund process.

Orders with status 'Waiting to Confirm Receipt' will also require your seller's agreement for the refund application.

If your order status is 'closed / completed', then refund is no longer possible.

Can I Pay with a Credit Card on Alibaba?

Alibaba has secure payment options that allows you to pay via credit cards or debit cards as long as they are issued by Mastercard, Maestro or Visa. However, you can only transact up to USDD50,000 via credit cards.

What is the Initial Payment on Alibaba?

When you purchase on Alibaba, you can place your order with a Secure Payment, for which customers are advised to pay the lumpsum at one go. However, if you cover your purchases with Trade Assurance, it is possible that you can pay an initial amount first before you pay the remainder amount. It would benefit both parties if the buyer and seller can communicate regarding the payments first before purchasing.

    What is L/C Payment Alibaba?

L/C on Alibaba refers to a Letter of Credit. This is a document issued by banks, financial institutions or financial suppliers that protects the sellers. The letter of credit assures a seller that  the buyer has provided documents to prove that payments have been made. In any case where the documents were not verified properly and the buyer fail to pay, the financial institution verifying these payments will be responsible for the amount.

What is D/A Payment on Alibaba?

D/A Payment refers to the Documents against Acceptance. In simpler terms, this refers to deferred payments or a credit arrangement. D/A transactions utilize term or time drafts. When a buyer accepts a time draft, the documents required for them to receive the goods will be released by the clearing bank.

What is D/P Payment on Alibaba?

D/P Payments refer to Documents against Payment. A sight draft is involved in this form of payment, and payment is done on demand. When the goods have been shipped by a supplier, the exported will send a sight draft to the clearing bank and any other documents required for the importer to obtain the goods from the customs.

In order for the buyers to receive the goods, they need to settle the payment with the clearing bank first before the D/P draft is released, or they might not be able to receive the goods. The exporter will retain the rights to recover and resell the goods in this scenario.

What is T/T Payment on Alibaba?

TT Payment refers to telegraphic transfer, which is a type of bank transfer. You can consider telegraphic transfers or TT Transfers as one of the simplest means of international banking transfers.

What is Western Union Payment on Alibaba?

Western Union Payments allow users to send money to other vendors around the world by phone, through the Western Union website or in person at any of their branches. The fees vary, based on factors such as whether the payment is sent in cash or wired to a bank, where the money is from and where it will be, and of course, the exchange rates.

What is MoneyGram Payment on Alibaba?

MoneyGram is similar to Western Union, although its domestic transfer fees are a little higher as compared to Western Union. The fees may vary greatly depending on where you are sending your payments.

    What is FOB on Alibaba?

FOB is short for 'Free On Board' or 'Freight On Board'. This means that the price you see for the goods you are purchasing includes the fees and any or all responsibilities for shipping and loading. Once delivered, the payment for the transportation and insurance of the goods are entirely up to the buyers.

    What is MOQ?

MOQ refers to Minimum Order Quantity. This means that unless you order the minimum order quantity stated, the supplier will not be accepting your order. As an example, an instant coffee supplier listing one of his products with the MOQ of 10 boxes means that you will need to purchase at least 10 boxes in 1 order for it to be shipped.

However, you can always initiate a chat with the supplier to see if you can work something out if you want to order in a smaller quantity.

If you have been on Taobao, AliExpress or Tmall, you already have a rough concept of what Alibaba.com is like. Alibaba.com is the world’s biggest B2B marketplace, where businesses can source their materials and ingredients from other sellers around the world.

As a supplier, there are two types of memberships that you can apply for - a free membership and a premium Gold Supplier Membership.

Over 85% of Buyers on Alibaba.com Prefers to Purchase from Alibaba.com Gold Suppliers!

With a free membership, suppliers can display and sell up to 50 products online with the provided selling tools.

However, with a Premium Gold Supplier Membership, the seller is now a paid member of Alibaba.com, known as a Global Gold Supplier (GGS).

There are strict regulations, authentication and verification methods that the seller will need to go through before they can officially become a Global Gold Supplier. Suffice to say, Gold Suppliers selling on Alibaba.com will enjoy many more benefits as compared to a free selling membership.

Your potential clients are always online - that’s nothing new. After all, why wouldn’t they be? A single search and a few clicks is all it takes for them to find all the options they will ever need for services and products that they are looking for. These same customers can conduct their entire research process online, making them exceptionally educated in making their purchasing choices.

However, regardless of how high-tech online shops can get, there are still some purchases that requires the customers’ presence in person.

Before online shopping and researching became a thing like it is today, most car shoppers would shop for cars fully within showrooms, requiring visits to various different showrooms before they decide on one to purchase. Today, an average new car buyer visits only two car dealerships before they finalize their purchase.

Since these potential buyers can now research and compare different car brands and models online, these buyers are already very educated about the entire buying process, so auto dealerships now need to step up their game and adjust their buying experience accordingly.

What A Car Dealership In Texas Did to Adapt to Modernized Car Purchasing Experience

    Source: https://youtu.be/d9AHfjeq_p4

Let’s just say that Park Place has optimized their website to shorten the time required for their customers to get the keys to their new cars at their dealerships.

Park Place recognizes the fact their potential customers initiates their first contact with them online, long before they decide to step into available showrooms for their next purchasing step.

Customers Purchase 2x Faster When They Engage With Park Place’s Website As Compared to Other Auto Internet Sources

The revolutionary move that Park Place took was to add a ‘Path to Purchase’ tool onto their site, allowing potential customers to complete up to 80% of their purchase online. Throughout this entire process, customers can always go for the chat option to talk to a Park Place consultant if they need any help. The purchase pathway was broken down into 6 steps as detailed below.

    Source: https://youtu.be/q9BA1NIS7c4

Step 1: Customers can browse their preferred vehicle models and choose one.
Step 2: Customers obtain instant pricing and financing options.
Step 3: Customers can enter their credit score to explore possible financial solutions.
Step 4: Enter your trade-in for instant redemption (if you are planning to).
Step 5: Include add-ons such as extended warranty, insurance or others.
Step 6: Submit information and schedule a meeting with a sales experience manager to finalize purchase and collect your keys. Car can also be delivered to customers’ home or office.

Notice how most of a car buyer’s worries and needs are addressed with this Path to Purchase?

Outstanding move, Park Place! They were very well rewarded by prioritizing their customers’ purchasing journey too!

Park Place’s Customer-centric Path to Purchase Tool Increased Online Car Purchase by 23%

Park Place did not just create and implement their tool on their website. They were also aware of the importance of mobile accessibility and searches.

In fact, 60% of automotive searches are from mobile devices.

This is why Park Place gave their mobile site a makeover so that their users can directly call the sales team, schedule their next servicing appointment, or get directions to the closest dealership near them.

Their results? Over 15,000 directions-related visits and 12,000 click-to-calls on a monthly basis.

    Park Place’s Paid Search Strategy

Needless to say, most online users would use searches as their research tool when purchasing a car. They placed higher bids for in-market audience for new cars and for car-related searches.

They also bid higher for mobile users to reach more mobile users, in accordance to the higher search rates for automotives on mobile devices.

How Park Place Measured Their Online Marketing Results

Rather than focusing only on the lower funnels such as lead generation or purchases, their marketing team switched their perspectives and started to look at offline visits to their stores, which was achievable via Google’s Store Visits. This feature is only open to a number of Google advertisers due to its requirements, but Park Place was able to meet them all and utilize this function.

Quoting Kennedy Gibson, the director of digital marketing for Park Place dealerships, he said, “One in five people that click on our paid search ads end up visiting one of our dealerships, which just proves to us that we are putting our ads in the right place.”

Key Takeaway from Park Place's Marketing Efforts & Results

Improving potential customers’ online browsing experience and creating a seamless experience for them can prepare them better for visits to showrooms and your physical stores. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that online experiences do not drive offline results!

Picture yourself scrolling through the latest posts on your social media feed. Once in a while, you’d see a friend or two posting about their most recent vacation. It might be your dream honeymoon destination, or perhaps it could be just another short getaway that you start to find yourself itching to go for.

Whichever destination it is that has piqued your interest, you are dreaming about that holiday trip now.

That’s stage one. Most of us don’t get past that stage, but if we do, then it’s going for the next two phases - planning and booking.

As you might expect, the stage where we plan our next trip will always take the longest. We start researching about the best cuisines in that location, the must-visit areas, the travel reviews and many more. This process could span over weeks or months.

    Here’s the million dollar question.

Can travel marketers utilise videos to help move these potential travellers down the purchase funnel?

Based on Airbnb’s latest branding campaign, the answer seems to lean towards a big yes!

    Airbnb’s Goals & Challenges

Airbnb has over 5 million home-sharing listings distributed over 81,000 cities globally. When this branding campaign was launched, these were its main challenges & goals:
    • Increase customer consideration for their listings in Latin America where customers know about Airbnb, but are not sure about how it works.
    • Effectively compete with traditional accommodation chains in Brazil.
Airbnb turned to YouTube - the second largest video platform in Brazil to encourage these target audiences to book their next trip.

They included a human touch into their video campaigns, showcasing the warmth and hospitality of the Brazilian culture into their videos. This consists of a showcase of Brazil’s lush greeneries, colour-popping oil paintings, and the videos also feature 6 Airbnb hosts in Brazil with a short and sweet welcoming message, “Pode entrar,” or in English, “You may come in.”

    Source: https://youtu.be/Nbk_esvUjUk

Sarah Galvao, senior brand marketing manager of Airbnb in Latin America, shared her reasons for the concept behind the branding videos by saying, “We wanted to highlight local stories so people can see themselves. The best way to talk about Airbnb is through the heart of the community: the hosts. Every video features real hosts, real homes, and real stories.”

The best part of their promotional videos that made it more than just a branding campaign? Airbnb made them actionable - users can take action after viewing the videos. Here’s how.

4 Ways Airbnb’s Actionable Video Branding Campaign Achieved Its Success

Airbnb Tested Their Brand Campaign On A Smaller Scale First

This accommodation company first tested its campaign on a smaller scale, running its test campaign during the offseason to test the efficacy of Google’s recent video ad offering - TrueView for Action.

Airbnb added the call-to-action (CTA) “Reservar” - reserve in English - to their videos, bringing interested video viewers to their website to search for accommodations with their preferred dates.

By testing their video ad campaign during the offseason, Airbnb was able to test their campaign and video strategies with a smaller budget and find out what works best before they launch their global campaigns.

Airbnb Utilized Machine Learning to Find Their Best Audience

Since Airbnb already has a good number of conversion data, Smart Bidding becomes a viable option for them, helping them to identify the most engaged audience through consumer patterns & search terms and target them for higher conversion rates and volumes.

Airbnb ran this campaign for two months. Throughout this duration, Dwight Pirtle, the programmatic and paid social lead at Airbnb agreed that it was tempting to change the campaign settings now and then, but also knew the importance of giving at least two weeks for their TrueView for Action campaigns.

Create New Creatives to Find New Audience

Understandably, Airbnb’s marketing assets are usually focused on reaching the in-market audience for travelling. Machine learning and smart bidding strategies also further accentuate their marketing efforts to reach those most likely to convert.

However, Pirtle has also agreed that they still need to find new audiences with their digital assets. As such, their video assets for this campaign have one main message “Pode entrar” all while covering different interests, themes and passions in them, including surfing, gardening and painting.

Airbnb paired these video assets with different themes and passions with affinity audience targeting on their video campaigns. This means that viewers that are about to start watching a video related to traditional arts or painting would see the video ad featuring their Airbnb host with a passion for oil painting, as an example.

Measure the Full-funnel Impact for the Branding Campaign

Here’s a quote from Pirtle that we loved.

“The way to gain a competitive advantage is to build in micro-conversions to inspire people and move them further down the funnel,” he said.

Contrary to usual marketing tracking and reporting, this campaign saw to it that the Airbnb marketing team linked the results of their latest campaign from the initial branding phase right down to the end of the funnel when the video viewers convert to reserve accommodation through Airbnb.

The result of this video campaign with all 4 pointers for their TrueView for Action campaign?

Airbnb received a staggering 142% increase in their branded search terms and a 14% increase in booking, showing that branding campaigns can increase their sales with the right strategies. Airbnb has also informed that they will be analysing their data over 120 days instead of their typical 30-day duration since most individuals will need a long time to plan their trip.

Advertising on Facebook - A General Guide

    1. Choose Your Objective

What’s the most important outcome that you want from the ad? Whether it’s sales on your e-commerce site, app downloads or just an increased ad awareness, choose the ad objective that is the most applicable for your business.

    2. Select Your Audience

You can get an idea of what your audience’ demographics are like along with their interests form your page insights. Utilize this data - including their age, location, behavior and interests that best represents your page audience as your ad targeting option.

    3. Choose Your Ad Placements

Currently, you can publish your ads on Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and the Audience Network. You can also choose to run your ads only on certain mobile devices! Choose the best ad placements for the creative and text ad that you are using.

    4. Set a Budget

You can opt between a daily or lifetime budget. You can also choose how long you want your ads to run. This will ensure that your ads will never spend more than you intend it to. Your budget can also be spent equally over the duration that you have set!

    5. Choose an Ad Format

From single images to a full canvas experience ad, there’s plenty of formats that you can choose from to run your ad. If you have several products to advertise, why not go for collection ads? Alternatively, you can run video ads, slideshows and many more.

    6. Confirm Your Ad

Once you click the ‘confirm’ button after setting up your ad, it will enter the Facebook ad auction cycle where it competes with other advertisers to reach your target audience. You might be charged per impression, per click, per landing page views or several other methods, but the amount you are charged will never exceed your initial set budget.

    7. Ad Management & Reporting

At any time when your ads are running, you can always check its performance - how many impressions and clicks they are generating, which ad version is performing better and so on. Feel free to make adjustments to your targeting options or add in a new ad variant when you are checking your ads’ performance!

If you have tried boosting your own Facebook page posts before, you would probably know about the 'Boost Post' button that appears on the bottom of your posts. That's one way for you to get paid Facebook Ads! The other way meanwhile, would be via Facebook Ad Manager.

Yep, there are two ways for you to get paid Facebook ads.

There are plenty more to Facebook ad management, especially if you are running your ads via Facebook Ad Manager. The more you explore this platform, the more functions you will notice and love about it. We have also covered the differences in performance between these two boost post methods.

Any of us who are actively prowling Facebook and Instagram would be familiar with the Facebook Story and Instagram Story feature. However, as much as we use WhatsApp as our chat and communication platform, the WhatsApp Status feature is not explored as often.

You might remember rumors from last year stating that WhatsApp is going to start charging its users for using the platform. The original USD0.99 annual charge decision was later on removed the same year after much protest and complaints from the users, and WhatsApp has stayed monetization-free ever since. While that issue is thankfully out of the way, there is something new brewing about the WhatsApp Status feature.

Facebook Native Ads Integration into WhatsApp Status Ads

WhatsApp has confirmed that they will be utilizing their Status feature as their main monetization product, starting with Facebook’s native advertising system. While this can be a good opportunity for Facebook to open up more ad spaces to even more advertisers around the world, FALCON’s co-founder has also remarked how these ad spaces are only good for the short term. Prospecting long-term wise, WhatsApp’s decision to run these Status Ads could be deemed as damaging for the company.

Currently, Facebook has ads showing in its messenger app, between Facebook posts, in the sidebars, and even between Instagram stories and posts as well. Recent news have confirmed that WhatsApp has confirmed their app monetization by inserting ads between WhatsApp statuses, although the date of commencement for this is still yet to be confirmed.

There were also some speculations where there could be a programmatic change to WhatsApp that allows business owners to send and receive messages from WhatsApp users from those status ads once they are live.

WhatsApp User Base A Good Opportunity for Facebook Ads?

WhatsApp has been a user-centric app so far with its decision to stay free-of-charge and not to run ads on their platform to ensure maximum user satisfaction. It’s no surprise that WhatsApp has managed to maintain its user base, but what next after plans to run these WhatsApp status ads?

There has been enough complaints that the ads are getting too intrusive on Facebook and Instagram, giving a bad user experience for anyone using these apps.

Are WhatsApp Status ads a good business opportunity, or a downward cycle of advertising?

    Your business decides this.

10 Strategies to Boost Your Facebook Organic Reach

When Facebook business pages have just started, business pages were able to expect their page posts to reach its audience all the time - which it pretty much did. However, organic page reach is getting more and more difficult to manage.

In 2014, Facebook Business released an update to news feed after surveying its users about what they would like to see on Facebook. The results revealed that most Facebook users want to see more updates and stories from their friends and pages they care about, and not so much for promotional content which some pages post way too often.

As such, pages posting promotional content as its focus - prompting users to purchase products, to install apps, to enter promotions without other relevant content, or even posts that reuse the exact same content from their ads, will see a decline in their organic reach.

2 years later, another update follows in a similar fashion, but this time, to reduce the organic reach of pages frequently posting clickbait content, so basically…

    How Facebook Algorithm Works

Even with all these algorithms in place, you don’t need to worry if you follow certain Facebook page guidelines and best practices! Facebook algorithms will benefit pages that are engaging and highly interactive - in a positive manner, of course.

If you are in Facebook groups, as an example, you might notice that posts with high engagements - comments, likes, etc., are shown on your news feed first. Posts with zero interactions rarely show up unless you are browsing the group page itself!

The same concept applies to Facebook pages - the higher the user interactions, the better favorability you have with Facebook’s complex algorithms. This enables your page contents to be shown to your users more often!

Here’s how Adam Mosseri, the VP of News Feed at Facebook explains algorithm and how it affects whether or not your Facebook posts show up on someone else’s news feed.

An algorithm is likened to a formula or a series of steps that solves a particular problem. In this case, there are 4 steps being considered, which Adam explained in the context of choosing what to order for his wife in a restaurant. He summarized the algorithm in these 4 simple points below:

    1. Inventory: Here, Adam checks the available options.
    2. Signals: Adam considers the best dishes in the restaurant, and whether it’s lunch or dinner time, along with that he knows his wife likes to eat.
    3. Predictions: Adam would make simple predictions in his head, such as, “Would it be weird if I ordered her a chocolate souffle for breakfast? How about having salmon for lunch today?”
    4. Score: With all the options considered, Adam places an informed order for his wife.

Your posts are like the inventories - there are plenty other posts available from a Facebook user’s friends and other pages they follow.

Facebook also takes into consideration signals such as the number of engagements a page post already has, how often the person or publisher posts, previous negative feedbacks on a person’s post and many other factors.

Of course, whether or not the post type is something that the Facebook user usually interacts with is also taken into consideration. The posts available to be shown to you each time you scroll Facebook will be scored with the signals provided, before a post is eventually chosen to be shown to you or your clients.

    1. Post for Interaction, Not for Sales

How Facebook algorithms work is exactly why you need to produce more content that encourages user interactions. We know, you have a Facebook page so that you can sell, sell, sell and get profits to go along with your company’s KPIs.

However, it’s important to remember that without something to reel your customers in first, you are unlikely to achieve what you set out to do. Take Gary Vaynerchuk’s business philosophy and strategy - Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook.

The jabs refer to the high quality content you provide your followers -  something they would appreciate. The right hook? That’s the ask; the ‘purchase now’ link, the subscribe prompt and so on. You might not land the right hook, but you have now earned the rights to try and land it - the rights to ask for the end goal - the sale. Quoting Gary Vaynerchuk, “You gotta throw some jabs before you throw your right hook.”

    2. Post When It Counts with Your Own Data

If you have just started your Facebook page, it’s unlikely that you can find the optimal time to post immediately. You can try posting different types of content at different times of the day consistently for a few weeks first.

Afterwards, you can head to the Facebook page insights to see how well your page posts fare when posted in different formats at different times of the day. You can find your Facebook page insights by going into settings, and then the insights tab at the top.

By entering Insights > Posts (Left Sidebar) > When Your Fans are Online, you can scroll over each day to see what time your users are mostly online, and schedule your posts to be published at that hour.

From our page insights, the best day and time to reach our users would be on 11AM and 1PM on Fridays, where the peaks are the highest.

Why not try exploring the Facebook Page Insights for your own business page and find out what information is ready for you so far?

    3. Post Your Users’ Preferred Format & Content

Again, you will need to test with several posts over a few weeks or a few months (depending on your posting frequency & quality of content) before you can decide the type of content that your audience likes best.

Let’s take for example our own business page.

After posting in several formats over the past few months, here’s what our Facebook page insights tell us about the type of post that has the most engagements.

Not too surprisingly, the video format gained the most traction among our page followers. The amount of reach and engagements has an increase of over 10x as compared to link, photo or status updates!

Of course, we were curious to see which post was the main contributor to this amount of reach and engagements.

Again, not too surprisingly, it was a giveaway post.

Reaching over 9.6K users, resulting in 1.1K clicks and 851 post reactions, comments or shares, our giveaway post features only a simple GIF with our logo on it.

It prompted our users to pause the video or GIF at the right moment and post the screenshot in the comment section with our hashtag #trinityangpao and to tag 3 of their friends. Additionally, they also have to like our page and share the post to even be qualified to win the red packets from us!

Even with these requirements, there were still plenty of engagements and participants for this giveaway.

So, we know that our audience interacts more with giveaway posts - especially posts with interactive content like this type of video.

A simple picture, status or link might not suffice, something we concluded when we experimented with our #Refer4Bonus incentive post that we shared with a blog post link detailing how to get a RM3,300 just by referring a friend or family member to work in our company.

    4. Keep Competitors Close

If you know your direct competitors and their Facebook pages on Facebook, you already have a good advantage with Facebook Insights tool.

Under Settings > Insights (Top Nav Bar) > Overview (Left Sidebar), just below the Page Summary and Your 5 Most Recent Posts sections, you will find a handy little tool called ‘Pages to Watch’.

Here, you will find the table populated with pages similar to yours along with a brief overview of how these pages are doing in terms of total page likes, increment from past week, the number of posts they have posted this week, and the number of post engagements they have had this week.

In the layout above, we have not added any pages to watch, but you can click on the ‘Add Pages’ button and find your direct competitors to observe how they are faring compared to your business.

If you see a sudden hike in their page likes or post engagements, you can then head over and see what’s working well for them and take that into reference!

    5. Post with Audience Insights in Mind

If you remember us mentioning Audience Insights tool in our previous posts, here’s where you can utilize it again. At this page, you can choose to view insights for users connected to your page at the bottom of the left sidebar.

Once you have enough users on your page, you will see data on the page’s users - what are their demographics, their location, their top page likes and many other details as previously discussed.

As an example, here’s a glimpse of what we see when we connect our Audience Insights Tool to one of our pages, Alibaba.com Malaysia Channel Partner - PanPages TRINITY.

With this information, you can focus on certain audience groups for giveaways, hold workshops that would align with their interests, and many more.

Knowing that most of  our users connected to this page are university graduates, for example, we know that we can post job openings applicable for university fresh graduates with or without boosting the post for wider reach instead of jobs with postgraduate requirements.

    6. Don’t be Scared to Share

You might think that you are recommending your page audience to other similar pages or businesses when you share their posts, but that is not the case!

Take for example Elite Daily which shares mostly their own articles from their online news platform. From time to time, you’d see them sharing articles from other similar pages that targets a similar group of audiences - millennials.

Does sharing Bustle UK’s post means that their current Facebook fans are moving entirely to that new page instead? Nope. Sharing valuable content from other sources can be a great way to provide value to your followers, so don’t be afraid to share and continue providing quality content!

    7. Provide Value - Even When You’re Not Around

If you have enabled the messaging function on your page - you really should if you haven’t, there’s much more that you can do with your pre-set messages than instant replies and welcoming messages.

Take for example Chatfuel, a freemium chatbot system that allows users to get some information on the common FAQs that we have on our page.

Recently, our Facebook page has tested this chatbot feature to see what it could do, and we were pretty impressed by how easy it was to compute and implement. It might take some time to get it set up right with all sorts of questions and answers that will be helpful to your prospects, but the result of being able to provide the information they want the very instant they ask for it will be worthwhile.

    8. Schedule Posts Ahead of Time

On some days, we would just be flowing with inspirations and ideas of what to post on our Facebook page. Don’t be hasty though!

There is always a post-scheduling function that you can use when you are drafting a post on your page.

When you click the ‘schedule’ button, you can pick a date and time for your post to be published. In the meantime, it will stay as a draft in your page, unseen by the public audience!

This handy little tool is super useful when it comes to scheduling your upcoming promotions or other informative posts while you are away, Remember to schedule your posts to be published at your page’s peak engagement time!

    9. Have a Social Media Content Calendar

Scheduling your posts to be published in a timely manner is always a good practice, but have you been planning about the type of content to post? Creating a social media content calendar will be good for this purpose.

Basically, a content calendar is a spreadsheet where you slot in certain posts on a certain day or throughout a week.

As an example, you can create a ‘Did You Know?’ post to be published on 9AM every Thursday, or remind your audience about why they should sign up for your upcoming workshop every 4 days in the month leading up to said event.

    10. Continue to Track & Analyze

When all the posts have been scheduled and published, you should still look back at how your posts and content types are doing.

Check your audience insights and page insights every now and then to ensure that your posted content are always relevant to your audience!

As a general guideline, the number of positive or negative interactions and the number of post engagements can be a good gauge of how good your content are to your page audience.

So, do you own a Facebook page? What are some of the strategies that has worked in your favor when it comes to post engagements so far? Let us know!
